Andrew Poplett (MIHEEM)

Andrew has over 25 years experience in the construction industry with over 17 years service in the NHS at all levels of the estates organisation. Starting off with Messers Haden Young as an apprentice mechanical building services engineer, he was involved in all aspects of the commercial building services business, including; design, tender estimation, contract management, and commissioning. He went on from Haden Young to start work for the NHS based at Newcastle General Hospital as an operational engineer, with specific responsibility for specialist services and ventilation systems, asbestos management, legionella, and aspergillus control.

After 8 years at NGH he had progressed to deputy estates manager, he transferred to become the Head of Estates at Northgate & Prudhoe (NHS) Trust. Here he developed and implemented the Trust estate strategy and undertook a significant review of assets to identify a comprehensive asset realisation process to improve the operational usage and effectiveness of the Trust’s property portfolio and generate significant capital sales receipts for inward investment for patient services.

In 2006 the N&P Trust merged with 2 other NHS Trusts to form the Northumberland, Tyne & Wear (NHS) Trust, Andrew became the Head of Property & Planning for the new Trust. His role included the development of the estate strategy for the largest mental health Trust in Europe, expansion of the asset realisation programme, including the development of site specific development control plans, and the review and management of over 150 lease and occupation agreements. The Trust had some 450 buildings spread out over 160 sites across over 2,500 square miles of the North east of England.
